The Committee for Responsibility in Research

Ethics Committee

The Committee for Responsibility in Research (Ethics Committee) advises on and assesses the ethical and legal aspects of the cases defined in the statutes. It also handles cases that legally require a safety assessment by an ethics committee.

The primary responsibility of scientists for their actions remains independent of the advice provided by the Committee for Responsibility in Research. Scientists at the University of Stuttgart should consult the Committee for Responsibility in Research before starting research projects involving serious risks to human dignity, life, health, freedom, property, or the environment. Security-relevant risks may also arise from scientific work likely to produce knowledge, products, or technologies that could be directly misused by third parties. This also applies if safety risks arise during the course of a research project.

Upon request, the Committee reviews and evaluates the ethical acceptability of research projects involving scientists from the University of Stuttgart. This may include examining the potential impact of proposed measures on humans, animals, and plants. Accordingly, it acts on the written request of scientists of the University of Stuttgart who are involved in or responsible for the project. The activities of the Committee for Responsibility in Research are based on the statutes adopted on January 18, 2017 and published on May 18, 2017, last amended on March 6, 2020.

Note: It was explicitly decided that the Committee cannot grant approval on data protection matters and considers only ethical aspects. For projects in which data protection aspects must be taken into account, please contact the Central Data Protection Office of the Baden-Wuerttemberg Universities (ZENDAS).

Applications to the Ethics Committee

Applications to the Committee should include a plain-language summary of the project as well as a detailed description of its ethical or safety aspects. Please also state whether applications with the same or similar content have already been submitted, and if so, where and with what outcome.

For projects involving study participants in university studies/experiments, please complete a questionnaire. This must be submitted in German. The other application documents can be submitted in either German or English. The answers in the questionnaire are intended to provide an overview of the aspects covered independently of the application document. Furthermore, it is requested that a draft of the study participant information be attached if already available. For projects that include a survey, a sample questionnaire is requested. This can be adapted for the actual study to give the Committee an idea of the types of questions participants may be asked.

As a rule, applications or planned projects are discussed before the project begins. If serious or unexpected risks that could affect the protection objectives in Section 6 para. 1 and 2 of the statutes arise during a research project, the Chair of the Committee for Responsibility in Research must be informed immediately.

Please submit requests or applications at least three weeks before the meeting dates.
