Mental health first aiders

Mental health first aiders at the University of Stuttgart support employees who experience a mental crisis.

Mental health first aiders are easily accessible points of contact. They are certified by the Central Institute for Mental Health in Mannheim and support people who are experiencing a mental crisis or the onset of mental health issues.

Mental health first aiders are not professional therapists or psychologists, but trained volunteers who take on this role out of personal commitment. They are supported by psychologists if they have questions about their role as mental health first aiders.

Mental Health First Aid in Germany

What can you expect from a conversation with a mental health first aider?

Are you going through a mental crisis or struggling with emerging mental health issues? People who are in such a situation usually feel depressed, anxious, irritable or suffer from persistent stress for a long time.

A conversation with a mental health first aider provides a straightforward and quick way to receive support during a mental health crisis, as well as guidance on which professional resources to contact.

The focus is on providing you with a sympathetic ear and emotional support; the discussions are confidential.

What can a conversation with a mental health first aider not provide?

The discussions are not psychotherapy and are not designed for long-term support. A conversation with a mental health first aider cannot replace professional support from specialists (psychologists, doctors, etc.).

Mental illness

Around 30 percent of adults in Germany suffer from a mental illness within a year.
We all know people around us who are struggling with mental health issues or challenges - be it in the family, among friends or colleagues. The sooner they receive professional help, the greater the chance that they will recover.

This is why it's crucial to recognize mental health issues early, approach those affected with empathy, and offer support. By doing so, we can ensure that individuals don't feel isolated and receive the help they need.
