Speaker: Sabine Saurugger

Over the last few years, commentaries about the crises gripping the European Union have increased exponentially. The media and experts in this field are concerned about the economic and financial crisis, the corrosion of democratic systems within the European Union, the refugee crisis, Brexit… But what really constitutes a crisis for a political system? And how can the consequences be examined? Based on the analysis of the characteristics of a crisis, Sabine Saurugger will be examining the current crises facing the European Union in terms of the long-term development of European integration and comparing these with other crisis situations facing regional organizations (MERCOSUR and ASEAN). This broader perspective is not intended to trivialize the crises or prophesize about the future of European integration, but to aid understanding of the crises facing our political systems in an extended temporal and geographic context.

This lecture will be held in French with translation assistance.

At the invitation of Prof. Dr. Patrick Bernhagen, Institute for Social Science, Department of Political Systems and Political Sociology.
