Regular childcare for employees
For its full-time employees, the University of Stuttgart has purchased places for regular childcare for infants aged between two months and three years at cooperating daycare centers near the campuses of both locations. In addition, the University of Stuttgart is a member of Kind e.V. Stuttgart, so that employees with children up to the age of 14 have access to daycare facilities run by Kinder in Stuttgart gGmbH near the Vaihingen campus.
Regular childcare at the University of Stuttgart with subsidized places is currently coordinated by the Uni & Family Service. Interested full-time employees can put their names on the waiting list for subsidized places for infants aged 2 months to 3 years in cooperating childcare facilities near the campuses of both locations, even before their child is born, and will be informed as soon as a place becomes available. To do this, fill out the application form and send it to the Human Resources Department for verification, which will forward it to the Uni & Family Service.

Childcare in and around Stuttgart
Since the university's offers are only supplementary, please also inquire about the childcare options in your place of residence. We have compiled some information from the surrounding municipalities.
Regular childcare in Stuttgart
You can use the online tool “KiTS”, which is offered by the City of Stuttgart, to find childcare services [de] in Stuttgart for children up to 14 years of age. Using “KiTS”, more than 500 municipal and independent providers can be listed according to criteria such as city district, age of the child, and types of childcare service. If the daycare center is operated by a municipal provider or by the Catholic or Evangelical Church, it is also possible to send a requirement message directly to the daycare facility, for a maximum of 10 selected childcare services. As a rule, daycare centers take in new children at the beginning of a kindergarten year - a kindergarten year is from 1 September to 31 August. If you are looking for a place for the new kindergarten year, starting from 1 September, it is important that you have registered your child by 15 February of the current year.
Please note: The City of Stuttgart provides information on the deductibility of childcare costs [de] on its website.
The umbrella organization of the parent-child groups [de] in Stuttgart provides information about the numerous parent-child initiatives in Stuttgart.

In addition to the municipal allocation of places, there are some independent providers in Stuttgart who offer the possibility of filling places without municipal subsidies. These are therefore considerably more expensive, but can be allocated regardless of where you live.
The tasks of child day care in Stuttgart are carried out by the Child Day Care Department of the Youth Welfare Office of the City of Stuttgart. The Caritas Association is responsible for arranging child day care.
Regular childcare in Böblingen
The City of Böblingen uses an electronic pre-registration procedure [de] for the allocation of places in all municipal and in some independent and church daycare centers. The kindergarten year begins after the summer break, in late August / early September. Positive answers will be sent out starting from late February.
As part of the TAKKI program, the city of Böblingen subsidizes daycare for small children under three years of age. The Verein Tages- und Pflegeeltern e.V. Kreis Böblingen [de] (registered association of childminders and foster parents in the Böblingen district) gives advice on this topic.
Regular childcare in Esslingen
The city of Esslingen has set up a daycare center finder [de] about the range of daycare centers in Esslingen in denominational, independent and municipal facilities. You will also find information on daycare registration and allocation of places [de].
In Esslingen, the Tageselternverein Kreis Esslingen e. V. [de] (registered association of childminders in the Esslingen district) gives personal advice and finds a suitable and qualified daycare professional for your child. In addition, the childminders’ association can also find you a nanny, who will look after your children in your own home.
Regular childcare in Ludwigsburg
There is a single application procedure [de] for more than 70 daycare centers in Ludwigsburg that are operated by various institutions and providers. Parents should register their children no earlier than one year before the desired admission. For the allocation of places beginning in mid-March, applications by 15 February will be considered. You can register your child for childcare online via the City of Ludwigsburg's parent portal [de].
The Competence Center for Child Day Care [de] of the Ludwigsburg District Office provides information and advice on all questions regarding child day care and the registration for childcare.
Flexible childcare provided by the university
-
The University of Stuttgart offers its employees, students and visiting academics extended flexible childcare to improve the compatibility of work, studies and family. It is organized and run by two cooperation partners (Eltern-Kind-Zentrum West e.V. (EKiZ); pme Familienservice Stuttgart). The offer is based on an initiative of the Collaborative Research Centers and is co-financed by funding.
Many university parents require exceptional childcare in addition to their regular childcare. Employees, students and visiting academics may have their children (0-10 years) cared for by the hour in the exceptional childcare facilities of the Parent-Child Center West in order to work or study at the university or to be able to participate in university events (e.g. failure of the planned childcare, further training measures, business trips, recruitment procedures, overtime or other professional reasons that make childcare necessary).
Location: Eltern-Kind-Zentrum West, Ludwigstraße 41-43
Childcare hours: Mon-Fri 8:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. (in individual cases, children can also be accommodated outside opening hours by prior arrangement)
Booking: Registration by e-mail, additionally telephone registration on the answering machine at 0711/505368-53, stating that you are an employee or student of the University of Stuttgart.
Costs: €5/hour during normal opening hours, €10/hour outside normal opening hours, plus €7/day for meals if required. In justified individual cases, the costs can also be settled via the university. The application form is currently being updated, please contact Uni & Family if required.
If regular childcare is unavailable at short notice, university parents need emergency childcare. Emergency childcare for children up to the age of 12 is offered free of charge on two days per semester. It takes place in the Eltern-Kind-Zentrum West (EKiZ) or in daycare facilities run by pme Familienservice during regular opening hours:
- Eltern-Kind-Zentrum West (EKiZ), Ludwigstraße 41-43; Mon-Fri 8:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.
- pme Familienservice “Bülowkids”, Heilbronner Straße 190; Mon-Fri 8 a.m. to 6 p.m.
- pme Familienservice “Schloßkinder”, Schloßstraße 76; Mon-Fri 8 a.m. to 6 p.m.
Prerequisite for use: Your regular childcare is canceled at short notice (e.g. due to illness of your childminder) and you have to work or attend university events during this time.
Important: Emergency childcare does not replace regular childcare. It is not a substitute for periods when your daycare center is closed or when your childminder is on vacation. Please use the low-cost emergency childcare service if you have to plan for childcare shortages.
To ensure that your children are already familiar with the respective facility in the event of emergency care, we recommend that you visit the facilities together with your children in advance. This is possible at the pme Familienservice daycare centers on the 1st Saturday of every month, please register in advance. The EKiZ and its café are always open to families. For more information and to book emergency childcare, please read the leaflet “Emergency childcare information”[de].
In exceptional cases, especially for single parents, pme offers supervised overnight stays in daycare centers (max. 24 hours), which can be used during short business trips, for example. Please contact Uni & Family for information.
Institutes or university facilities can also book childcare for their events, training courses and recruitment processes. Childcare can either take place in the emergency care facilities or in suitable premises (e.g. at the university or near the event location).
If your institute or university institution would like to use childcare during events, you can book it yourself within the framework contract of the University of Stuttgart:
- Childcare in the EKiZ West: Mon-Fri 8:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.; registration by e-mail, additionally telephone registration on the answering machine at 0711 505368-53 with the note that the booking is for the University of Stuttgart.
Costs: 5 euros per hour (The costs can be paid by the parents in cash on site, or you can agree in advance that your institute will cover the costs and an invoice will be sent to your institute/institution). - Childcare in daycare centers run by pme Familienservice: “Bülowkids” at Heilbronner Straße 190 and “Schloßkinder” at Schloßstraße 76, Mon-Fri 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. (phone 0800 801007080).
Costs: 119 euros per day of use, regardless of the actual hours used (max. 10 hours). Pme invoices Uni & Familie, so please contact Uni & Familie for the internal settlement of costs.
On-site childcare: For on-site childcare, specialists from the EKiZ West will come to the premises of your choice and look after the desired number of children. Toys or craft materials can also be booked on request. The costs are made up of a flat rate, the hourly wage for the caregivers, the travel costs for the caregivers and the toy rental fees. Please contact Adriane Gentner (Head of Education at the EKiZ) for advice on the number of staff required for the number of children and age group you have in mind and for a quote. Please note the current funding conditions if you wish to use third-party funding.

- As the vacation programs are subsidized, the prices quoted for vacation childcare apply exclusively to children of full-time employees (including visiting academics) and students of the University of Stuttgart and only if the employment relationship or enrollment at the University of Stuttgart still exists at the time of the vacation childcare. If you do not belong to this target group (e.g. as a lecturer or because your employment ends before the date of the vacation care), participation in the offers is generally possible, but only at a higher price. If you are in doubt whether your child can participate in the above conditions, please contact us before registering your child.
- Due to the Income Tax Act, some childcare services for children aged 6 and over (e.g. vacation care, flexible emergency care, family-related additional costs for business trips) can only be subsidized tax-free up to a total amount of 600 euros (per employee, not per child!) per calendar year and only if the care is necessary for compelling and work-related reasons.
The programs can therefore only be booked by you at the “internal” rate if you have not/not yet reached the limit of 600 euros and there is a compelling professional reason. If you do not or no longer meet one of these reasons, please register for a “non-subsidized place”.
Classification: If you only make use of vacation childcare (and no other flexible childcare services), you can book up to 6 weeks of childcare.
