When the earth shakes - how to build secure houses
Prof. Dr.-Ing. Balthasar Novák, Institute of Lightweight Structures and Conceptual Design (ILEK), University of Stuttgart

Every year in the news, we read about earthquakes from all over the world. Sometimes the damage is minimal, but sometimes earthquakes cause huge damage and suffering, the earth opens and buildings fall into the abyss.

But why does the earth shake? What exactly causes this? And when it shakes, how can we construct buildings so that they can't be destroyed by an earthquake? Which materials are suitable for earthquake-resistant buildings and which are unsuitable? Is it possible to combine materials so cleverly that buildings are able to survive an earthquake without being damaged?

Online registration for the winter semester 2018/2019 is only possible via the Stuttgarter Zeitung. The registration period is expected to begin on November 6, 2018.
