If you are aspiring to a long-term career in academia, you will eventually face the challenging question, "How do I apply for a professorship?" This workshop aims to inform you in detail about all phases of the appointment procedure for W1 to W3 professorships in Germany and to provide you with specific assistance and tips for your application.
Contents and Format of the Workshop:
This seminar takes place in a blended learning format. First, you will be given access to a self-study video (length: 3 h 10 min) in which all essential content on the topic of “applying for (junior) professorships” is presented in detail.
The video first deals with the procedure and formal aspects of the appointment process.
In the next section, all the necessary application documents (especially CV, cover letter, concepts) are discussed in detail and illustrated in part with sample material.
The third part covers the expectations and requirements in the hearing with the appointment committee as well as important steps you can take in preparation. You will receive tips and short demonstrations on how to structure your scientific presentation and teaching demonstration. In addition, the most frequently asked questions and topics in the committee interview are presented.
You will then take part in a one-day group session via Zoom, in which you will have the opportunity to clarify any remaining questions surrounding the topic of applying for professorships. Additionally, all participants will give a 3-minute presentation, which they have prepared in advance, to introduce their own profile (introductory part of the scientific presentation) and receive feedback from the other participants and the lecturer. Finally, the interview with the committee is discussed separately. Here, you will answer some typical questions from committee interviews and also receive feedback on your answers.
Please note: Watching the self-study video and preparing the 3-minute presentation is a mandatory prerequisite for a meaningful participation in the group session. Instructions for the presentation are included in the video.
The seminar includes subsequent process support. Participants have the opportunity to send their application documents to the trainer when they enter the application phase and receive written feedback on how to optimize them.
TARGET AUDIENCE:
The seminar is aimed at postdocs of all levels of experience (R2/R3) who are participating in the mentoring programs of the Graduate Academy (GRADUS). It is specifically geared towards participants with little to no experience with appointment procedures, but of course, more experienced participants are also welcome.
